Since it first aired on Sept. 15, 1990, "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" has earned its place in pop culture history as one of the most successful examples of educational entertainment. Captain Planet was the brainchild of Ted Turner, the media mogul who launched the Captain Planet Foundation one year later as a means to help fund environmental initiatives created by children — and put into action tomorrow's green leaders.

As the CPF celebrates 20 years, it's yet again gearing up for its annual Benefit Gala on Dec. 9,  at the Georgia Aquarium. Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter Alison Krauss will headline the entertainment — while high-profile celebrities, civic leaders and attendees will bid on live and silent auction items. Famed celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck will cater the evening. From the release:

"The event will also feature Captain Planet’s “Superhero for Earth Awards” given to individuals who help inform the public about eco education, sustainability and being responsible stewards of the environment. Dr. Sylvia Earle, dubbed “the Sturgeon General” for her world-renowned oceanography work, will be in attendance to receive the CPF Exemplar Award."

You're sure to recognize Earle as one of oceanography's biggest celebrities. The 76-year-old, who in 2009 won the distinguished TED Prize, has been credited with drawing increased awareness to the ocean's threatened marine life and habitats, particularly with the high-profile celebrity crowd. Turner recently named her as one of the founders of his new nonprofit organization, OceanElders.

Tickets to the event start at a steep $1,000 (for two) and climb to $25,000 (for 20). To purchase, and to check out additional details about what goodies each price bracket includes, jump here.

Thanks, Ted Turner, for recognizing an idea whose time had come. Captain Planet laid a lot of groundwork for the leaders of today's effort to save this earth.
