Never heard of the guy? I urge you to download, rent or borrow a copy of the 1984 Rob Reiner mockumentary "This is Spinal Tap" and further your music comedy education. Tufnel, played by the great Christopher Guest, is part of an '80s British rock group called "Spinal Tap" being followed by a documentary film crew.
Naturally, while the members of the band are talented musicians, they're absolute idiots otherwise. In one classic scene, Tufnel is giving the director of the documentary a tour of his guitar collection; pointing out a custom amplifier with knobs that all go to 11. When the director asks, "Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?" Tufnel simply answers after a pause of incredulity, "These go to 11."
Hence today's appreciation of Nigel Tufnel and his quest to rock louder. There's even a Tumblr page dedicated to the man with the title: "The Nigel Tufnel Day Appreciation Society and Quilting Bee in Favor of Declaring & Observing November 11, 2011 as Nigel Tufnel Day (in Recognition of Its Maximum Elevenness)"
Think that's a ridiculous thing to name a day after? Get back to me after "National Bundt Pan Day" (Nov. 15), "Married to a Scorpio Support Day" (Nov. 18) or "Rocky and Bullwinkle Day" (Nov. 19).
Turn your volume up to 11 and check out this memorable scene from "This is Spinal Tap" below.
