As you immerse yourself in these bold black-and-white visuals by photographer Rui Veiga, you might reasonably conclude that this must be the work of a seasoned pro. But believe it or not, Veiga only began developing his talent for black-and-white photography in the past year through the power of online photo communities and the increasing accessibility of digital photography tools.

Despite the wealth of technology at his fingertips, Veiga tends to gravitate to a classic aesthetic that prioritizes simplicity and minimalism.

“I like taking pictures in black-and-white because it travels through time and adds a touch of supernatural,” he explains in a recent interview with Instagram. “It is a style that allows me to go straight to what inspires me.”

In addition to his love of all things monochrome, Veiga’s striking work is characterized by his use of dramatic silhouettes, geometrical patterns, sharp perspective, bold graphic shapes and an expert use of natural light. The models seen in his portfolio are often friends, but he also delights in catching candids of pedestrians and other unknowing passersby in his current home of Lausanne, Switzerland.
