Demi Moore's hospitalization earlier this week was initially reported to have been the result of fatigue and emotional distress over the recent divorce-filing from her husband, actor Ashton Kutcher. According to TMZ, the real cause was nitrous oxide, a gas popular with younger kids looking for a quick high.
The site quoted a source close to the situation who said Moore was doing "whip-its" (a street term for an inhalant with the gas) when she fell into a semi-conscious state and experienced seizure-like symptoms.
Fox News reports that after her hospital visit, Moore checked into a treatment facility to seek help for substance abuse. A rep for the 49-year-old said that she was seeking "professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health. She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support of her family and friends."
In the wake of her split from Kutcher, many in the entertainment world have commented on Moore's increasingly gaunt appearance and weight loss. A source told RadarOnline that the actress' recent reaction to the nitrous was likely due to her fragile state of health.
"Demi is in getting treated for anorexia, as well as other issues that caused her seizure," the source said.
Moore's representatives declined any further comment beyond the written statement.
