With Brad Pitt's 50th birthday approaching next month (December 18th), speculation is rampant as to what ridiculously amazing gift Angelina Jolie might bestow upon her partner. The latest rumor to explode yesterday? The 11-acre, heart-shaped Petra Island on Lake Mahopac in New York.
The Daily Mail and a host of other international sites ran with the news yesterday, saying Jolie purchased the secluded spot for both its romantic symbolism and connection to Pitt's favorite architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
"As soon as Angelina heard the island was on the market she arranged a viewing," a source told the UK Mirror. "She was really impressed. The house is perfect for romantic getaways or as a family retreat. It’s very private. And Angelina knows the fact the island is in the shape of a heart will mean so much to him."
While Petra features two residences, it's the main 5,000 sq.ft. house that draws the most attention. Built in 2008 from plans originally drafted by Wright for the location, it features "1,500 square feet of skylights and vast expanses of stone, cement, and mahogany." Considering Pitt's love for architecture, it's easy to see why this story had legs (remember that waterfall Jolie was rumored to have bought him for his 48th?) - but a family member for the seller says it's all just talk.
“I don’t have any idea where that [report] came from,” Donna Massaro, the daughter of the owners of Petra Island, told Page Six. “The family threw it out there to see if anyone was interested, and so far no [potential buyers] have [come forward].”
Listed at $20M, all of this attention certainly will not hurt the owners chaces of finding someone to scoop up the property.
"It is still for sale. We are open to show Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt the island but they have to have lunch at my cafe first," Massaro, who owns the Freight House Cafe, jokingly told E! News. "It [the house] is a labor of love and a piece of art."
