Unlike a majority of famous people on Twitter, if you ask Ricky Gervais a question, you just might receive a timely response.

A fan recently sent the 51-year-old comedian a tweet saying, "having watched #Derek my parents agreed if you retweet this they will buy my sister a dog & let you name it!”

Gervais complied and helped the guy and his sister out - but with one condition. Gervais retweeted and added to the end, “A rescue dog tho.”

Such a request should come as no surprise to those who follow the comedian; a long-time animal rights activist on issues ranging from stopping bullfighting to ending medical testing on animals.

"My first love was nature and wildlife, and, in particular, animals," he said in a past interview. "I think animals are all unconditionally perfect, and beautiful. Animals really matter to me."

After retweeting the dog request, Gervais went on to expand upon why all of his 4 million Twitter followers should always consider adopting a rescue animal.

“How can anyone abandon a beautifully loyal dog? It’s not an accessory," he said. "It’s your best f**king friend. It makes me so sad & angry."

Pop into an animal rescue centre today. Even if you have no intention of taking a little critter home, get a free cuddle & donate a fiver  ” He continued, “Animal shelters can always do with any old duvets & blankets too, by the way.”

What an intelligent, lovely, caring man he seems to be. If only more people loved animals as much as Ricky does - this world would be a haven with all creatures living as equals.
