Treasure hunting

Some people think flea markets only peddle junk. But for others, the swap meets are the ideal way to find valuable antiques or score bargains on tasteful used furniture.

The secret is to find the right flea markets. Many meets are no more than glorified garage sales where the odds are poor that you'll find anything usable. The best markets, however, like the Brooklyn Flea Market at Fort Green shown here, draw experienced antique dealers and serious collectors. But even in this setting, buyers will have to wade through less-valuable merchandise to find the gems — they're there ... if you know how to spot them. (Text: Josh Lew)
