Celebrating life, today and tomorrow — that's Diageo's motto, and one that extends beyond the enjoyment of alcoholic beverages to making a better future for nearby communities and the planet. For North America's number one spirits company, that means working hard at both social responsibility and sustainability.

In its 2013 Sustainability & Responsibility Report, Diageo details the strides the company has made in these focus areas, including safe drinking initiatives, water conservation and protecting the environment where the ingredients for its products are grown.

This year, responsibility efforts included the Safe Rides Home program, a collaboration with New York City's Department of Transportation, which helped provide free rides and encourage people celebrating with alcoholic beverages to always plan for a designated driver.

Diageo is also the leading supporter of The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization that works to eliminate drunk driving and underage drinking. Their “Ask, Listen, Learn” initiative empowers kids to say “yes” to a healthy lifestyle, and “no” to underage drinking.

Diageo's products rely on a wide range of natural resources, so it's important that the company protects everything from the rivers and lakes that provide water to the ecosystems. In North America the company made significant progress this year in reducing carbon footprint with a 22 percent decline from 2012 and 76 percent since 2007. Waste sent to landfills was also slashed with 99 percent now being diverted through more sustainable alternatives such as recycling and reuse.

For the fifth year in a row, Diageo was awarded a 100 percent score on the Corporate Equality Index of the Human Rights Campaign, and landed on Working Mother Magazine's list of 100 Best Companies.
