20 clever uses for duct tape
Duct tape is the absolute darling of the do-it-yourself set. Here are some novel, even wacky, uses for it.

Multi-colored duct tape

In the 1940s the United States military asked Johnson & Johnson to devise “a waterproof, strong cloth based tape that could keep moisture out of ammunition cases.” The result was a superhero adhesive tape made from a rubber-based adhesive applied to a durable duck cloth backing. Originally called duck tape, due to its cotton duck substrate, at some point during the last half of the 20th century it became better known as duct tape, owing to its employment in ductwork.

But over the years something else evolved with the product along with its name. It became the absolute darling of the do-it-yourself set — the indispensable item in the tool box, craft room, car trunk, back pack, sports bag and junk drawer, not to mention submarines and NASA spaceships. It's the sine qua non for emergency hacks and for making do with what you have. And its durability makes it an integral component in extending the life of broken things, giving them a new lease on life and keeping them out of the rubbish heap. And although to some, duct tape crafts and repairs may scream, "low-rent and tacky," we're seeing a shift in the zeitgeist that suggests a new era of duct-tape chic is in the air. So find some inspiration here and get taping.

I LOVE these ideas! (Especially the "fashion some flip-flops"!) I'm trying to remember all of the great ways to use this that we have done; I used some as a bandage while on a camping trip and none of the bandages I had were large enough. (That was rectified right after we got home!) Also used it to patch a leaky tent, to splint the broken leg of an easel, to temporarily attach a muffler on an old car that constantly tried to rid itself of said muffler, to put around the base of a candle so that

it wouldn't fall over in a candle-holder, wrapped around the aluminum frame of a lawn chair whose seat had fallen through, and used tiny bits to fix a pair of glasses when the arm had twisted and broken off and I needed something to see with until I could get a new pair. My goodness, the possibilities are endless!

I'm using it to fix my headphones right now.
I also fashioned a temporary "E" key for my laptop because my kitten tore the old one off.

The Groton Electric Boat nuclear submarine shipyard in Connecticut uses a proprietary form of Duct tape nicknamed "The Green" which is a hundred times more adhesive than the commercial version. It's illegal to take it off the base. It touches bare skin, it needs to be surgically removed.

Splint a sprain. I'm also considering using some to replace upholstery tape in light duty chairs, after a local upholsterer referred to duct tape as "Alabama upholstery".

I discovered a really, really clever use for duct tape the other day. I found a hot air duct on my furnace was leaking and I used duct tape to seal it up.

Who knew?

Okay #20. This happened a few years ago. Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers is a big rivalry. Near the Wisconsin/Illinois border there was a bar that supporters of both sides would visit. There was one especially obnoxious Green Bay fan. Whether it was a win, or a loss, a bunch of Bears fans took the Packer fan outside and duct taped him to a stop sign. Left him there for about an hour.
