Bear Grylls just can't help himself when there are larvae around. In this one he comes across an ant nest and uses his wits to trick them into bringing their larvae out and underneath the shade provided by his jacket. Okay so, everyone is talking about how Bear Grylls is fake and where I completely agree he's **** (Especially where Survivorman is concerned), I'm concerned with one thing here the author said. Author, if you're reading, please change the "toxic" tag after "boiling water in a plastic bottle." It is only toxic when using a polycarbonate plastic bottle (Marked hash tag 7). I am retired from the U.S. special forces (Ranger). First of all, Bear Grylls is not a fake. He is the real deal. He is special forces trained. The level of his training is in question though because of his designation (look it up). He also knows survival technique.
However, his show is very fake. Melodramatic action. Half truth. False statements. Misrepresented claims. These are all very well documented and have caused many of his early episodes to be re-edited or disappear all.... More

Bear Grylls is Legit! He knows what he's talking about and what he's doing. He's also done one of the worlds toughest training camps, the French Foreign Legion. Google it. The guy has more credentials then any loser sitting at a computer saying he's fake would have. Like to see one of you people climb up a steep sand dune bag full of rocks on your back and jog all through the night into the day. I don't think anyone is doubting his physical fitness or even his tough guy status. But smarts out weigh testorerone in survival. My advice to Bear: Stop showing off your physical prowess and start showing off smart survival.
It wasn't the real foreign legion. He was trained (for a TV show) by people who do train the foreign legion. That would be like me claiming I trained with the Navy Seals because one of them showed me how they trained.

It's two different shows. Bear is presenting difficult situations and demonstrating last resort survival techniques. Les's show presents a man surviving a few days in different environments. Les isn't typically presented with the situations that require the extreme techniques Bear uses.
Here is where one of the major problems is. Bear Grylls isn't presented with those situations either. He climbs down a canyon for no reason. He could go around. He jumps into water for no reason (again, go around). He makes up the reason to do such things. Also, when he does them he makes up melodramatic actions-- See the famous lava field crossing that was full of lies.

It's informative and entertaining. Bear makes his way to "civilization" and shows you all the obstacles you could face in that terrain. Les shows a more realistic approach and hunkers down for 7 days. I mean at the end of the day I'm sure Bear could hang with Les and survive like him minus the camera crew. You have to understand that it would be mighty foolish for Bear to show the techniques that he does without personnel around and without a camera crew. Try free climbing down a steep cliff.... More
Bear is a fake. These 'locations' aren't all that far out, usually, and he does not always stay the night outside. He stays at hotels.
It's a shame he's the more famous of the Discovery Channel survivors duo. Les Stroud is far more impressive. He'd make a tent out of Bear Grylls skin after Bear Grylls died in a real survival situation.
You're right, because doing a show about surviving out in the ocean, sleeping in the chaser yacht because of a storm halfway through, and not resetting the count the next day makes you much better at surviving than the ex-military person.
