The gathering bills itself as "the world's most affordable science fiction/fantasy convention. "Accidentally founded" in 2010 by Captain Drew of the Cardboard Troopers, the "traveling convention of tens of devoted attendees," spans several Atlanta hotels over five hours.
"Unlike other sci-fi conventions you might be familiar with in the city, we like to keep it small," Captain Drew said.
This year, about 50 cardboard costumers gathered in early March, making appearances at several Atlanta bars and hotels and holding a short parade down Peachtree Street.
Lucy Bartash, who came dressed as a cardboard dragon, was the winner of this year's costume contest and had her name "permanently inscribed" onto The Cardboard Cup, a trophy composed of cardboard, bubble wrap and duct tape.
