Light up the night

Stonehenge is illuminated by the Fire Garden, part of the Salisbury International Arts Festival. The Fire Garden commenced on July 10 and will continue on July 11-12, part of a 12-week festival celebrating the launch of the London Olympic Games on July 27. Stonehenge has been a place of celebration for thousands of years. To mark the site's function as a celestial observatory, visitors will pass between concentric circles of flames and huge fire balls like this one that mark calendar positions.

Transformative lights

The Salisbury festival is a yearly gathering involving about 120 events, spanning from concerts to exhibitions to dance to comedy.  Maria Bota, the director of the festival, says the idea is to "inspire, entertain and make moments which transform people and spaces."
