A microscopic snapshot of a grain of salt measuring 2 millimeters in diameter is the first-place winner of the 2012 Research as Art competition, organized by Whale's Swansea University to encourage scientists to make their research accessible.
The tiny grain composed of sodium chloride and sodium sulfate was produced and photographed by Hollie Rosier and her colleagues while researching jet turbine safety. When jets become very hot during flight, compounds such as salt tend to encrust on the turbines.
The 15 other winning entries include hand-knitted representations of enzymes and a stunning view of the sun setting over icebergs in a Greenland Fjord.
