We have a storm cellar and we're going to can what we grow," says Wynonna. Mom Naomi personalizes canvas bags with photographs and gives them away. "I carry them in the trunk of my car. And I encourage people to rescue animals. My latest rescue dog is the joy of my life." Also a devoted animal person, Wynonna is a longtime supporter of dog rescue and is the national spokesperson for the North Shore Animal League's Tour For Life adoption initiative. "Dogs were my only friends when I became famous at 18. I've learned more from animals than people," she says.
The duo star in a new docu-series on the Oprah Winfrey Network that follows their reunion tour and their sometimes difficult relationship, which is why their therapist is along for the ride. "I have been in a healing, recovering process since 2003. The most important sacred thing on the top of my list of priorities was to heal my relationship with my mother. This tour made me appreciate my mother even more," says Wynonna. "I think we are in such a great place right now. I want to celebrate the good, bad and ugly. We are willing to be real. And it is scary sometimes, but it is easy to forget the cameras are there. And that is a good thing. We are able to be ourselves."
Nevertheless, says Naomi, "There were a couple of things that they requested we do, and
because we are both recovering people-pleasers, we went along and they had horrible outcomes yet wound up on camera because we don't get creative control." But the show isn't exploitative, Wynonna insists. "When I hear the word 'reality' I think of a train wreck. Not that we haven't had our own at certain times during the tour. But we definitely have what I would refer to as more moments of teaching and more moments of celebration than we do of that." Adds Naomi, "I feel like this tour has brought us closer."
In addition to "The Judds," which premieres on OWN with two back-to-back episodes April 10, the duo has released a compilation CD called "I Will Stand By You: The Essential Collection," featuring 12 classic songs and two new tracks. Wynonna is working on a CD for fall release, "a record that's gonna kick butt, and after that I may do a disco record, a dance record."
