Shooting reported at Discovery TV offices
Maryland police report a shooting has taken place in the lobby of the Discovery Communications building, and hostages are being held by a man with an environmental agenda.
Police have evacuated the headquarters of the Discovery Channel in Silver Spring, Md. NBC News is reporting that one shot has been fired. A daycare, located in the building, has successfully evacuated the building and the man is now talking with hostage negotiators. Authorities have confirmed no injuries at this time.
MSNBC and other news organizations have identified the suspect as James J. Lee (pictured right.) Lee was arrested in February 2008 and has a website registered to his name called SavethePlanetProtest.com. At the time of his arrest, he was handing out a leaflet in which he raised a number of objections, namely accusing the Discovery Channel of covering only some environmental issues. He was given a suspended sentence and a restraining order was put into place. (Read more about his environmental agenda below.)
Sources say he is upset with Discovery Communications for its reports on global warming and overpopulation. He has a history of protests at the building in suburban Washington.
