3 Nifty reusable straws

Pick from bamboo, glass or stainless steel to find straws that'll let you abandon your disposable habit and embrace reusability.

Mon, Mar 09 2009 at 4:30 PM EST

I'm not a fan of straws myself, but those who are seem to have a hard time letting go of the habit. So, here are three options that'll let you abandon your disposable straw habit and embrace reusability:

GlassDharma’s glass straws. Always wanted to sip hot chocolate — or hot coffee — through a straw? GlassDharma’s glass straws work for both hot and cold drinks! Handmade in the U.S, GlassDharma straws are both dishwasher and microwave safe and come with a lifetime guarantee for repair or replacement. Pick from a plain straight straw or a straw with a bend; more colorful straws called “Decorative Dots” are also available. Get them for $5 each, or get a 4-pack with a free cleaning brush for $14.95, at Buy Green.

Reusable Bamboo Party Straws. These fair trade are made in Laos and are certainly unique-looking. The major downside to these straws is the cleaning process, which seems cumbersome: “cover them in water with vinegar, boil them for 20 minutes then lay to dry. You can get a dozen in a handwoven cotton bag for $16.95 at Global Exchange.

Stainless steel straws. These steely straws look kinda cold to me, but at least they'll match your stainless steel flask or cocktail shaker! Plus, stainless steel's easily recyclable. A set of 4 straws costs $12.99 at After5.
