My friend Becky Striepe, who is an enthusiastic (but not judgmental) vegan, brought this to my attention via EcoLocalizer. From June 20-28th, vegans all over the world will be taking part in the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale.
The organizers are making it easy for anyone wishing to hold a bake sale to take part. All they need to do is choose a date, find a venue to hold the sale, pick a good cause to donate the funds to, and sign up on the website to let them know about the bake sale.
The organizers have only two rules that they request participants stick to:
- Goods sold must be vegan. For baking, most importantly this means no dairy or eggs.
- Don't sell or distribute anything during the bake sale (books, brochures, etc.) that contributes to the intentional harming of animals.
Baking without eggs, butter or milk may be foreign to many of us, but vegans do it successfully all the time. A while back I interviewed Becky Striepe, and I asked her to point carnivores to vegan recipes. She said that her go-to book for converting carnivores is Isa Chandra Moskowitz's book Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. She said, “even if you have no interest in veganism, these cupcakes will rock your socks. I promise!”
For those of us who aren't willing to give up animal products completely yet, but want to reduce the environmental impact we create by using fewer dairy products, perhaps giving vegan baking a try is one way to do it. If vegan cupcakes can rock our socks, it won't even seem like a sacrifice, will it?
