Flyaway By Suzie Gilbert

As I exit my car at the top of Suzie Gilbert’s very long, very steep driveway, I’m immediately greeted, not by a recuperating hawk or crow (as you might expect from a bird rehabber), but by Merlin, Gilbert’s very large, very amiable black curly-coated retriever. Gilbert ushers me inside to meet Mario, an African grey parrot — and resident eccentric — who Gilbert adopted from a shelter years ago.

I just read Flyaway, and was blown away. I have my own finches at home, but also hang birdfeeders outside in a small garden. I'd love the opportunity to work at a rescue center or shelter. Suzie's right; birds are amazing creatures.
I, too, feel that each of my 18 finches has her/his own personality. They both calm and lift me.

It has been my delight to know Suzie all of her life. MNN review of "Flyaway" is a good reflection of a truly amazing person. I would just like to add her compassion and concern extends to mankind and has certainly enriched my life even if I can not fly! F G

Aloha
I too hold federal and state permits for the rehabilitation of wild birds. There are only a handful of us in Hawaii and the work can be overwhelming. Suzie's book accurately shares a rehabber's world of compassion, sorrow, and magic with her readers. Rehab work is endless and all consuming, but the joy of successfully releasing a bird is worth it all. Thank you Suzie for sharing your gift with both the human and avian world.
