Tangier Island, Va.
It’s not just cars that are prohibited on this 3-mile-long island — alcohol and credit cards aren’t allowed either. However, there’s plenty of boating, biking, crabbing and kayaking to be done. Tangier Island truly feels like a world unto itself because British forces used it as a staging ground during the War of 1812 and the island’s residents speak with a distinctive Cockney accent.
