Avoid the crowds

Each year, millions of travelers descend upon the world's ultra-popular travel destinations. The crowds are sometimes part of the attraction: Tourists go to Negril or Daytona Beach to party and socialize and to Paris or New York City to experience the big city buzz. However, many travelers come home thinking, "If only it wasn't so crowded, I would have enjoyed it more.” This is especially the case in places that have nature-oriented attractions.

Travelers have a couple of options when trying to avoid tourist traffic jams. They can head to a remote, not-yet-popular destination before it is discovered by travel bloggers and guidebook authors. Another, perhaps more feasible and convenient option, is to go to a popular place during the non-peak season. The trick is to find the window of time when good weather, lack of crowds and low prices combine to create the perfect vacation experience. Whether you prefer to share the scenery with beach bums or mountainous sheep (like these in Iceland), here are some of the most worthwhile places to travel during off-peak seasons. (Text: Josh Lew)
