Mount Bromo is one of the most prominent volcanoes in Indonesia, an archipelago known for its volcanic activity. Bromo sits about four hours (by car) outside of Surabaya, the largest city in Eastern Java. At just over 7,000 feet, this mountain is not the most impressive in Indonesia when it comes to size, but it does boast some of the best scenery of any volcano in the world. Bromo sits in the middle of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, a huge protected area with several notable peaks. The mountain-filled landscape creates stunning panoramas, and many sightseers scale nearby peaks to take in the view of Bromo and its peers in dramatic early morning or late afternoon light. Both trekking and 4x4 tours of the area are a possibility, with the former passing through volcano-side villages on the way to the mountain.
