Natural drama

Volcanoes are one of nature's deadliest phenomena, but also one of its most fascinating. With features like lava flows, steam vents, hot springs, and their symmetrical cone shaped slopes, these explosive mountains find their way onto many tourists' to-visit lists.

Unfortunately, volcanoes are not appropriate for people seeking a casual weekend-long adventure. They are often located in remote corners of the Earth, so hopping a flight for a couple of days of lava-viewing is usually not a possibility. Because of the time investment (not to mention money investment) required for this type of adventure, choosing the right volcano destination is an important task.

Luckily, there are some obvious headliners (like Hawaii's Kilauea, shown here) and a few under-the-radar volcanoes that are both accessible and spectacular.

If you are seeking a volcano, these mountains should be at or near the top of your list. (Text: Josh Lew)
