Mount Angel, Ore.
Mount Angel, only a half-hour outside Oregon's capital city of Salem, was founded in the late 1800s by German settlers. The Old World buildings that these early inhabitants constructed still stand around the town's center, and many have been converted into shops or restaurants. There is also a traditional Benedictine Abbey in the town, housing handwritten books and illuminated manuscripts. Each year, several hundred thousand people come to Mount Angel to celebrate one of the most traditional Oktoberfests outside of Germany.
