A few years ago, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke made headlines when he threatened not to perform at events with huge carbon footprints. This month, a new coalition called Green Music Group announced its goal to make greening efforts the norm in the music business.

A project of eco-nonprofit Reverb, Green Music Group is a coalition with a star-studded list of founding members: Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, Linkin Park, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, The Roots and many more. Green Music Group will basically expand Reverb’s efforts to make the music business more eco-friendly by involving a larger green coalition of environmental non profits like The Sierra Club and Oxfam America, music companies and industry leaders, artists, and fans.

How can fans get involved? Visit Green Music Group and join the online community to get regular calls-to-action — sweetened with a chance to win prizes like VIP tickets to shows — beginning next month. Join before then and you’ll be entered to win one of three eco-friendly guitars signed by GMG founding artists.

The official launch event for the group happened Grammy weekend at Jane’s House in Hollywood with performances by some of the founding members. Hear what they, as well as Pete Yorn, Jason Biggs, and other celebrities at the event, had to say about what Green Music Group is  and why it’s important in the video below.
