Ecollywood: On the red carpet at the Spike TV Scream Awards

Spike TV drew an eclectic array of celebs to its annual pre-Halloween Scream Awards, honoring the heroes and heroines of horror, fantasy, sci-fi and comic books, and we caught up with some of them on the red carpet. Tune in Oct. 27 at 10 p.m. to watch all the action.

 

Rutina Wesley told us that she practices recycling on the True Blood set (with scripts) and at home, where she does all her banking online. “It’s all paperless. We’re very green,” the actress said. We also learned that Jaime King (Gary Unmarried) owns two hybrid cars, a Prius and a Lexus, and Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) always turns the lights and the TV off when she leaves a room.

 

“Just last week I performed for the Surfrider Foundation. They just celebrated 25 years,” said guitarist Dave Navarro (below), who doesn’t surf, “but I’m born and raised in L.A., and the beaches were a big part of my childhood. I want to do whatever I can to help save them.”

 

Jackie Earle Haley, who stars in the upcoming remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street as well as Shutter Island and the Fox midseason series Human Target, told us he did some recent home renovation. “I made a point to stick with some of the old tile so I wasn’t ripping out and putting in new, but now that I’m done I may rip it out and put in something more green,” he said.

 

“I really didn’t turn the air conditioning on until we went into triple digits,” declared electricity-conserving Kate Vernon of the award-honored Battlestar Galactica, noting that she also conserves water, recycles and gets multiple uses out of every plastic bag. Castmate Tricia Helfer (left) is building a green home in her native Alberta, Canada, and she swapped the tropical garden at her L.A. house for drought-resistant succulents. Katee Sackhoff, whose mom raised her to recycle everything, is planning to build a new home “that will be completely green, from the bottom up.” Formerly the formidable Starbuck from Battlestar, Sackhoff joins the cast of 24 this season as computer analyst Dana Walsh, the sweet-natured fiancée of fellow cast newcomer Freddie Prinze Jr. “It’s a completely different character for me,” said Sackhoff, who’ll be in a “nice little blue dress” all season. “Doing stunts in skirts is not a fun thing,” she’s discovered.

Chris Massoglia, who plays the title role in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, recycles and takes shorter showers. “I live in Minneapolis and it’s a pretty green, clean city,” he noted. Costar Josh Hutcherson grew up green. “My dad works for the Environmental Protection Agency, so of course we recycle all the time, we always turn off the lights, and use energy-saving light bulbs.” In Cirque du Freak, opening Oct. 23, he plays a vampire named Steve, and in 2010 he’ll appear in The Kids Are All Right and the remake of Red Dawn. “Now the Chinese are invading instead of the Russians,” compared Hutcherson, who had two weeks of weapons training for the role. “I start out as a tech guy, kind of a nerd, but by the end I’m a warrior,” he said, adding that he’ll shoot a Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D sequel next summer, “either in Hawaii or Costa Rica.”

 

Julie Benz replaced her old light bulbs with CFLs and moved to a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood.  “I walk everywhere,” said the Dexter star, who promises “a shocker” in the Showtime series’ finale. “I never saw it coming. It changes everybody and changes the show at its core, and it sets up season five,” she teased, offering no details. She’s also the only woman in The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, opening in limited release Oct. 30. No stranger to boys’ club sets, she pointed out the advantages: “You get to work with fantastic men and get pampered. They take very good care of you. It’s great.”

Not only does actor Matthew Bomer drive a Prius, he’s the star of the hybrid car’s advertising in Japan. “I’ve never been there but I did a commercial and ad for Prius in Japan, so I’m internationally green,” says Bomer, whose new series White Collar premieres Oct. 23 on USA. “I always recycle, I set the thermostat higher and open windows instead of running the AC,” he adds, and he often rides the subway or his bike when on location in New York for the show, in which he plays a charming con man who helps the FBI solve crimes. “A con artist operating on the fringes of the law is intrinsically really fun to play,” says Bomer (also of NBC’s Chuck), who was hooked by the character’s intelligence, mischievous attitude and romantic side. “He likes to test people’s boundaries but he’s also looking for the girl who is the love of his life. He’s a really three-dimensional character.”
