Seems that some have read this list and the ingredients but didn't really read the rest. Forget about the petroleum industry and what is getting into our water supply or the ocean. Focus on the fact that this stuff is going into our bodies. Our skin, the largest organ folks, and hair absorb these toxins and they are there doing their worst to us internally, we don't have to drink the watrer.
What about the line a LITTLE lipstick? Sorry, I don't know any women who use lipstick that.... More

The ONLY reason for going without a paraffin wax dip is because it supports the oil industry?? Somehow I don't think that forgoing this treatment is going to have any kind of effect on their revenue.
I support nuclear energy as well. If people really want to get "green", why not choose a form of energy that doesn't use all the oil-supporting plastic and metal that is needed to make all those windmills and solar panels?

The Onion said it best with its mock headline, "'What harm can throwing away one plastic bottle do,' thirty million people wonder."

Talk about overstated hysteria and sucking the fun out of life. The planet is in fine shape and will continue to be long after we're all gone. And if you insist on continuing to bash the 'evil oil industry', at least abandon the stupid wind/solar fantasies and support nuclear energy. You can bury the first nugget of nuclear waste in my back yard.

There is no scientific evidence for any of these claims. The article itself even says that these "may" be ruining the planet but have no scientific evidence to back it up. I'd rather not live my life in paranoia and continue with what I'm doing rather. Besides that, anything can be lethal taken in large quantities.

I'm not into perfume, nail polish, lipstick, exfoliating cream, parafin, or lip balm. And now I'm happy about because I'm somewhat helping the environment!

I believe everything they're saying. I believe a lot of these items even cause cancer. There's a cancer epidemic in this country and the government doesn't even care. Everything should be healthy and organic!

I totally agree. And, in addition, did you know that in 2005 the World Health Organization declared "the pill" a carcinogen?... bet you didn't!... we could probably stop putting so much effort toward breast cancer research if we'd just quit perscribing "the pill" as a "fix everything" solution... time to get informed people!!! :)

I'd like to know why hormonal contraceptives didn't make this list... extra estrogen is being excreeted from women everyday into our sewer systems and the treatment plants cannot eliminate it from entering our water systems... We are ALL ingesting this extra estrogen and it is affecting everyone's bodies! Even look up the research done on the affect it has had on animals - male/male nesting and confusion in the great lakes, etc... This, my folks, is bad news for the earth and humankind.

Birth control pills are not a beauty product, which were the focus of this article. That's why not.

How could you have left off one of the most toxic items in our bathroom cabinets? Hair dye has PPD. If you're dying your hair and haven't looked into this, you should. Paraphenylenediamine (PPD) is a chemical substance that is widely used as a permanent hair dye. It may also been found in textile or fur dyes, dark coloured cosmetics, temporary tattoos, photographic developer and lithography plates, photocopying and printing inks, black rubber, oils, greases and gasoline.

It's not that they aren;t regulationg our beauty products and all, because they have to be FDA approved, but when you look at the bigger scheme of things, it's not enough of the chemical or it's very diluted anyway, that it hardly makes a difference, you think just because you RARELY use lipstick it's actually gonna make you sick? OR god fordid, we wash our hands with anti bacterial soap, that ends up fading off within the next hour anyway, or our sunscreen gets into out HUGE HUGE.... More

Dilution is not the solution to pollution. Even the tiniest amount of a toxin can harm you and the environment big time. That's why its important to opt for natural alternatives rather than the synthetic junk, which is just toxic waste that the chemical/petroleum industry didn't know what to do with, so they reformulated it into "health" and beauty products. And natural products don't have to be expensive. You don't need to buy Burts Bees. Just get the ingredients and make your own stuff,.... More

of course i care about the environment but i hate how its become such a "trend." i dont think many people truly care; they're just going along with the whole green thing because if you don't you get treated like a murderer....

also its easy to tell say you should "opt for this or that expensive brand/option" but not everybody can afford burt's bees everything! i would love to buy nicer stuff, organic or not, but i hasn't the money :P i wish all these super health nuts would remember.... More

I choose to buy sunscreen that does not contain all the "bad stuff" that ends up in the huge oceans and have yet to get burnt... other options exist to protect you from sunburn while not harming the enviornment. You make a very weak argument.

I support the petroleum industry. It's the reason we have almost everything in the world today. So don't tell me not to buy something because we're supporting the petroleum industry. Without it, we'd still be living in the wild wild west.

You missed the point entirely! You should be upset about the poisons that are used in beauty products and that are unregulated. There are safer alternatives.

I Couldn't agree more! Telling you not to buy something because it "supports the oil industry" is a load of hypocritical crap! While you are at it why don't you stop driving your car and heating your house because you are supporting the oil industry.

This list overlooks one of the worst personal products.... hair conditioner/creme rinse. This stuff makes your hair feel smoother by filling natural irregularities on the hair shaft with synthetic polymers. There's convincing evidence rinsed-away conditioner forms film on coral reefs, suffocating them. It also promotes more shampooing, ergo more plastic product bottles and chemicals going down the drain and into waterways/lakes/ oceans.

This guide is really helpful to know what key ingredients to avoid in beauty products. It's overwhelming how many chemical toxins are found in one chapstick or one tube of hair gel. However, most natural products are really expensive. Check out the book "Grow your own drugs", it's a recipe book for home made beauty products!

Our home environments are getting to be very toxic places. Here's a video clip that punches this up further: http://organicconnectmag.com/wp/2010/02/slow-death-by-rubber-duck/

This was a really helpful article. Especially the part about the sunblock and lip balm!

Paraffin dip

When you opt for a paraffin hand or foot treatment at the nail salon, you’re supporting the oil industry. Paraffin wax, often used to make candles, is a byproduct of petroleum. Stick to a regular mani/pedi instead and rely on moisturizing creams to soften your skin.
