I used to go to Henry's and spend a fortune buying all the natural and organic products- but I have been in Italy for the last six months and could not find anything comparable. Google saved me. "No-poo" baking soda and cider vinegar for my hair with an egg wash once a week, baking soda and salt scrub as toothpaste, cornstarch as my matte powder, sage wash to cover my Mom's gray, chamomile to bring out my blonde highlights, coffee and sugar scrub on my face twice a week... the list goes on. .... The day green products become affordable to all, not only developed countries, that day people can become "green" on what products they use. Not before. The prices on organic products are forbidding. Sorry to say it like that, but it's easier to say "go green" than do it, at least for most of the world.

Look, everything out here has both positive and negative effects on us and the planet. I think the big thing you should think about is decreasing the amount of these products you use. A little really does go along way with alot of these things, and there are tons of ways to help maximize what you get out of what you buy. And the more money you save, themore you'll have saved up to start switching to the greener products if that's what you choose... also, to whoever was talking about cancer.... More

I keep hearing these things and I try my best....but in the end I just don't have the kind of money to switch to naturals....;_; I already have to spend a hellish amount at natural food stores because of lactose intolerance and acid reflux. I'm just a college student... And a graphic arts major at that. I know people say to just do what you can. But constantly reading these articles is making me SEVERELY paranoid....Every other time I read something like this I end up having a panic.... More

Ladies and gentlemen whether or not we choose to go,"organic,"natural","greener",its a personal choice.Even though it would make the world healthy again as it was before factories and other manufacturings were made as one person somewhat explained earlier in the comment posts.Take the time to think about it,was there cancer of all types ranging before the 20s (the beginning of factory production).I don't consider that just a coincidence or the main cause.Anyway,I know some of you might think.... You can actually go to a website run by a nonprofit organization (Environmental Working Group) www.cosmeticsdatabase.com to find out how toxic your products may be. Even products that are "natural" and "organic" can have toxic chemicals. It will give you a hazard score, tell you what disease the chemical has been linked to and will also list products according to their hazard score. I found a.... More

I am allergic to every hair dye I have ever tried. I do know that black henna is supposed to exist but I have neither tried it or seen it. However,I buy mine in an Indian grocery store. If you live in a fairly large city, you could go in and ask if you can find a female clerk who speaks English. The directions are usually in Arabic and/or Hindi. You will want to mix the henna with an acid-yogurt or vinegar, till it has a pudding consistency. This should sit for at least 1/2 hour but I usuall.... More

TRY TO USE YOUR BRAIN. Use less. Use it less less often. Read the labels. Baking soda and vinegar are marvels-and cheap. My mother had me rinse my hair in it after shampooing when I was a child. She said blondes should use lemon juice. I dye my hair with henna. Every time I get my hair cut,the stylist marvels that I'm still using henna-plain old henna, for $2.99 a box. It takes 3 hours, but the box lasts for 6 months to a year and covers my grey and gives me a natural reddish brown. My hair is.... More

Constant use of henna will suffocate your hair, as it doesn't blend with the hair cells, but rather coats the hair. That, over time, will make your hair dry and brittle. Unfortunately, there is no natural alternative to coloring gray hair that wouldn't dry your hair or put chemicals in your body :(

Remember. You are looking for what is safe - not what is not a chemical. Chemicals are the building blocks of nature. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat are not just full of chemicals, they ARE chemicals.

I have been wanting to dye my hair back black and when I go to a saloon or do my hair my self I ALWAYS have an allergic reaction to the hair dye. I then heard about the henna hair dye and want to try i but I have no clue as to where I could buy it at (what stores) is there any hints that you could give me as to where to go to purchase it?

I buy mine for 6.99 at New Seasons grocery store, if you have one nearby. You can probably find it at other natural, organic, or health food stores, or indian grocery stores. I'd test it first- you can still have an allergic reaction to henna, but it is much more gentle than chamical dyes. The colors are mostly in the red-brown range- there is black, but it's pretty much just really, really dark brown.

NEVER use black henna unless it says 100% pure henna with no additives. I've read A LOT about black henna tattoos, which uses a very harsh chemical to make it black. People have had severe allergic reactions that their body takes years to recover from. Just be aware of what you are buying!

The problem with Henna is that after using it you cant use any other type of color on your hair because of the way it reacts with regular boxed or professional salon color. So once you use it your stuck with it until you cut or grow your hair out. I recommend going to a salon that offers organic color.

You should be able to get Henna powder (not shampoo) in any indian grocery store. Search for Indian stores near you. If you couldn't find, there are some grocery websites that you can buy from. Here are some

Don't believe it Danielle, without testing for yourself. I was so upset today when I heard that the "Mosque" is actually a community center that is being built 2 blocks away from ground zero and actually not AT "ground zero". A "Hidden Agenda" is the reason why Clinique is there.

I am all for using products that are non-toxic. However, keep in mind that because a product is ' all natural' or 'green' or organic, doesn't make it good for your skin or hair. For example, some hand lotions have lemon juice in them. Obviously lemon juice isn't toxic, but it can dry your skin. Peppermint isn't toxic either, but it doesn't make for healthy hair. Paula's Choice cosmetics are a good choice.

Obviously just because something is green doesn't make it an efficient or feasible alternative, but Paula's Choice? I hardly feel a site that down cuts most all product out there while PUSHING HER OWN LINE is HARDLY objective, a resonable or valuable source of right and reason. She calls herself the "cosmetic cop" and yet her products have been known to have things in them that aren't so health and planet aware and in some cases are miserably BEHIND in knowledge and technology. She was saying.... More

I found out that Aloe Vera Gel 99% pure in a plastic bottle u can buy anywhere and rub it gently on your scalp where dandruff occurs and it will sting if you have been scratching it, but otherwise it will heal completely. I don't suffer from it anymore whether winter or summer.. bye bye dandruff

Apply lemon to your hair. You can also have your last hair rinse with lemon. That helps to get rid of dandruff

Aubrey has the best organic natural ingredients I have found anywhere...no chemicals whatsoever, my excema cleared up after three days after having it for 15 years when I changed everything I put in and on my body (including dish soap, don't use it if it contains tricolsan) my dermatologists were astounded. You can find Aubrey shampoo, conditioner, etc. at your health food store.

This is a bunch of BS! If you havent noticed almost EVERYTHING made in this world has drawbacks that come out YEARS after the product has been out. From food to beauty products like seriously? How many times do I come on Yahoo and see the same crap! Why make all these products when they are "toxic"? Ridiculous!

because you buy it and it's cheaper for the manufacturers to use oil bases for their products than natural extracts. The cosmetic industry has no regulation in the US. Maybe this article is pushing their own line, but it is important for people to realize that the products they use are toxic, both to themselves and to the environment. Yes, perhaps it does take years of using a shampoo with a toxin in it to have any effect on your body, but if you combine that with a toxic body wash,.... More

I agree. They know what their doing...making all of this stuff with toxins. It's all about greed and making money. They don't care who gets cancer or whatever else. Cancer is a money maker too. I believe wholeheartedly that there is definitely a cure for cancer but the government doesn't want us to know about it because look how much money would be lost. They're all in it together...the pharmacies, government, FDA, etc.. You name it.

Take whatever shampoo you're using and water it down by 50%. You'll save money, use far less shampoo, get just as clean scalp, and without any effort, cut your effect on the environment throught the use of shampoo in 1/2. Just keep your last empty bottle and fill it half way with the contents of the new bottle. Then add water.

Take a closer look at what’s inside typical beauty products — the facts get pretty ugly. From harsh chemicals that pose health risks to the prevalence of petroleum-derived ingredients, you might be surprised to learn that what’s inside all those bottles and tubes is ruining the planet.
