If you’re tired of all the chemicals and synthetic fragrances in most store-bought creams and lotions, you might want to consider making your own. Most people think that making creams and body lotions is difficult but it’s actually fairly easy. I frequently make my own and give them as gifts to friends and family members who seem to love them.

This is a great recipe but I wouldn't call it a lotion. It turns out more like a body butter and makes about 16 oz. You'll need a pretty big container. A tip: make sure your water is warm, as close to the same temp as the oil as you can get it for good emulsification. Half way through the blending process it looks like it isn't going to mix but keep going. I blended mine for a solid ten minutes, and stopped half way through mix to the floating water into the bottom of the mixer with a spoon..... More
Just an observation: adding a vitamin E capsule or oil is not only beneficial to your skin, but it will also help preserve your lotion.

I am just now researching all the NATURAL ways to make stuff that I use everday, shampoo, lotion soap etc. I find that everytime I even eat something with preservatives in it now (at almost 40) I feel ill. its as if I have developed allergies to so many things, its odd. Dont most people grow out of thses things instead of into them? Anyway, I hope this helps my constantly itchy and irritated skin :) thanks for the help!

Mine started to emulsify like you described but for some reason mine turned back into a watery substance as I was getting it out if the blender... What happened? What do I do with all that product, is it wasted?

Do you have to use glass containers or can you use plastic...and if glass, is there a certain color of glass like amber or is clear ok? Also, if I wanted to use shea butter would that sub for the almond oil or the beeswax? Thank you!

Excellent piece. Candelilla wax (soft) and Carnauba wax (hard) are au naturale alternatives to beeswax that aren't byproducts of petroleum industry though. They work well in lipbalms and salves. Definitely plan to use them to make this a vegan recipe.
Could someone tell me if it cocoa butter, shea butter or soy wax would be a suitable alternative to the bees wax? I wanted to make this for some friends and some of them are allergic to bees, so I don't want to chance it! - Thanks!
As a pregnant woman, I can smell chemicals in ways that I never could before. I've used all the major brands of lotions and soaps and they all stink at this moment. This is the first time that I have begun using natural soaps and lotions and it makes a big difference. So this article is awesome!! I can make my own lotion and hopefully save some money.

I tried this and my skin immediately started to burn. Welts followed and I had to go to the ER for treatment. They said that my airway was closing. I guess you might warn your readers who are allergic to bees.

You didn't read this apparently. There is a warning.
OK, so you want to avoid "nasty chemicals"? Simply mix together Almond oil (monounsaturated oleic acid, linoleic acid, and palmitic acid) with some water (dihydrogen monoxide), add in some beeswax (triacontanylpalmitate, cerotic acid, various other oleate esters etc.), and then give it a nice smell with some essential oils (generally a combination of terpenols, terpene esters and ketones).

It does make it better when the product you are using doesn't have 'hidden health risk' that are hidden from the consumer so they can make huge profits.
You state that everything contains chemicals. Believe it or not, there are stores that sell organic items that require little or no processing at all.
Further, if you're referring to the Natural Chemicals that are produced, they are just that; NATURAL chemicals. The manufactured stuff is what is vastly more harmful.
I just made this and it turned out wonderfully. I added a combination of natural essential oils and it smells great.
It makes my skin feel super soft!
I added some cinnamon oil to scent it and gave some to my mom in a jar as hand cream. :)
