CSX has provided rail-based transportation services and solutions for nearly 190 years and judging by its fifth annual Corporate Social Responsibility report, the company looks to continue long into the future in a responsible way.

The report, aptly titled "Moving Forward," highlights progress the company made in 2014 toward goals in four different areas: business performance, employee empowerment, environmental sustainability and community investment. As highlighted in this video, it was a year to be proud of.

"CSX experienced one of the most dynamic years in our nearly 190-year history in 2014, and we have many achievements to celebrate," said Michael J. Ward, chairman and chief executive officer.

In the area of environmental sustainability, CSX achieved company-record fuel efficiency last year, with the ability to move one ton of freight 483 miles on one gallon of fuel. It also integrated sustainable development practices into new intermodal terminals in Winter Haven, Florida and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec.

When it came to investing in the communities in which it serves, CSX didn’t hold back in 2014, investing more than $18 million in grants and in-kind donations to nonprofits. And through programs like Beyond Our Rails, the company logged nearly 25,000 employee volunteer hours and it also announced 107 projects, which are expected to generate nearly 5,800 jobs in local communities.

Knowing that all these projects, as well as the overall success of its company, depend on dedicated and motivated employees, CSX paid close attention to employee empowerment in 2014. Just some of the efforts included doubling conductor hiring in the second half of 2014 and completing more than 1.6 million hours of employee training.

"Our employees bring Corporate Social Responsibility to life every day by operating responsibly in the communities where we live and work," Ward said. “We take great pride in that. This report is about our work to meet the needs of our various stakeholders and our plan to continue anticipating the demands of tomorrow.”
