Note: We are continually accepting applications for these positions. Read below for more information about this great opportunity.

Welcome to Mother Nature Network. We're seeking correspondents from across the country to be the local eyes and ears of MNN. If you want to make a difference and have your work exposed to a national audience, we'd like you to participate in MNN State Reports.

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone with experience in writing, editing or photography or anyone with an interest in environmental issues who is seeking hands-on experience. MNN combines unconventional original content alongside breaking environmental news from around the Web. We cover a wide range of issues, from wilderness issues to sustainable living. If the topic is of interest to people who love the environment, chances are we write about it — and you can, too.

We want reporters, photographers and videographers with the right combination of talent, interest and commitment. We want a wide range of people — students, professionals and beyond. Our system gives correspondents flexibility in scheduling because all of the work is done remotely.

Think this might be for you? Read on for more details and submit your resume and cover letter to local@mnn.com.

What will I do?
MNN local bloggers, photographers and videographers are vital to our operation. They work (virtually) alongside the MNN team as they write stories, share local environmental news and insights and produce YouTube clips or photo galleries. In addition, each correspondent has his own page on MNN, allowing him (or her) to discuss the most interesting environmental stories of the day.

This experience can be a good fit for students or professionals in journalism, environmental studies or architecture, and it can also work for writers who want a resume-building experience that might lead to a job in new or old media.

The particulars
• We accept applications for MNN State Reports on a rolling basis.
• The program's focus is local and is run from your campus or hometown. Correspondents are encouraged to come up with their own topics to cover, and some assignments will be made.
• Each participant is part of a state channel at Mother Nature Network, where his or her resume-building work can be followed by millions of readers who are interested in the environment.
• The program is unpaid, but we periodically reward strong contributors.

Just submit a resume and cover letter to local@mnn.com and specify your interests.

Companies, newspapers, blogs and orgs need to stop luring in interns to work for free. If there is a job open and work needed to be done, MNN should pay. Simple as that. This is another step to lowering the bar so that bloggers don't get paid well. Don't do it. Thousands of other blogs will pay you to write for them.

HI Rachel, its good to hear from you. While we do have a couple of full-time job openings on the site right now (and are interviewing away for them), our intern program is a volunteer position for readers who want to let us know of local happenings and insights from their home towns. The position usually takes 7 to 10 flexible hours a week and lets students and others spread the word.

Interns are paid or recieve college credits for the work they do. The "positions" you are offering here are not internships nor should they be advertised as such. You said it right, this is a VOLUNTEER position, even if it is a volunteer position that you are requiring an application for. Volunteers recieve hours that they provided their services and it is usually non-profits that they can write off on their taxes. As a website that offers volunteer positions you must be willing to keep track.... More

This sounds great! I was wondering if we have to submit anything else besides a resume and a cover letter? Plus, is there a deadline?

anonymous
Amanda 01/07/2010 23:25 PM

I didn't see any age requirement. Is it possible for a high school student to apply for this internship?

Hi Amanda, we welcome all talented folks - high school, college, parents, retirees....anyone who cares about the environment in their state.

Hello. I would like to become a correspondent and write articles to make a difference. I want to know if I can still apply and do this. I am very interested in environment and effects it has on health and other aspects of life. It appears there is already someone in my area, Louisville, who is a correspondent but I live in Oldham County, KY and still want to know if this is a possibility for me.

Thanks

There's no problem is there's already another correspondent in your state. States are big places :) and we're eager to have as much local reporting as possible. So please do apply!

Good luck to all of you who have posted! For those of you who are interested, I just wanted to add in a plug here and say that this internship is an absolutely fantastic way to get your voice out and make a difference on the environmental front for your state. Remember: it's what you make of it!

Hi!

This sounds like a great opportunity for students! However, what are some great opportunities for recent college grads with a degree in Environmental Studies? I graduated this past May and would love an opportunity to work with your organization in any capacity I can. I am in the Atlanta area.

You are welcome to apply anytime you like, even if you are in high school. You can send your resume and any information to contact@mnn.com.

Also, is it possible to update our applications with recent accomplishments? and is it alright to just submit a cover letter and resume? (I didn't know that we were supposed to submit additional clips as well.)

Dear MNN,
I applied for this internship a few months ago but have not heard back. Is there a specific time that I will hear back from you?
Thanks!

anonymous
Nahal 05/20/2009 03:45 AM

Hello, I will be attending an out of state school come the Fall, and therefore I was wondering if there were any internships purely offered during the Summer, or if I could shift the gears of my internship onto my campus during the school year.

hdlugozima_2 05/20/2009 10:14 AM

In some cases, we do allow students to start reporting from one state & then move to another once they start/stop college. Write us at contact@mnn.com and we can get into the specifics with you.

If you're a green-friendly person...and can write/video, then we'd love for you to apply.

I'm a senior college student currently working as a field technician in wetlands research (through the EPA in a roundabout way), a few prairie chicken surveys for windfarm placement for energy companies, etc. I'm also a Wildlife Ecology major....I've noticed that there seems to be more preservation than conservation on the site, just wondering if I'd fit. Doesn't seem like there are many hunters/anglers on the site. What are MNN's stances on hunting, fishing, etc?

anonymous
Hope Dlugozima 04/20/2009 10:39 AM

Having an intern who had worked in wetlands research would be ideal for us. And we're equally interested in preservation as well as conservation (and all aspects of the environment). Just sent your resume & cover letter to contact@mnn.com to be considered.

Maaz Shah 04/13/2009 14:08 PM

Hey, I was wondering about if there is any age or grade specified. If AA in Ca reads this, please email me back. I am very intrested.

anonymous
Hope Dlugozima 04/14/2009 09:44 AM

We're happy to receive applications from all and are willing to consider out-of-the-norm circumstances if your qualifications are good (i.e. maybe you're out of school for several quarters). Just send your clips & cover letter to contact@mnn.com. A note of advice, though: Be sure to spell words correctly when you send us your application. Can't help but notice that even in these casual notes....your words are your currency. :)
