Join MNN's local correspondent program

We're seeking environmentally savvy writers to be part of MNN's nationwide correspondent program.

Update: We are continually accepting applications for 2010 and beyond. Read below for more information on this great opportunity.

Welcome to the Mother Nature Network. We're selecting correspondents from across the country to be the eyes and ears of MNN in their cities. If you want an experience that will make a difference, we're eager to hear from you. Have your work exposed to a worldwide audience at MNN State Reports.

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who has experience in writing, editing or environmental issues or who is seeking hands-on, real-life experience for a future career. MNN combines unconventional and lively original content alongside breaking environmental news from around the Web. From wilderness issues to green technology, from politics to sustainable living — if the topic is of interest to people who love the environment, chances are, we write about it.

We want reporters, photographers and videographers with the right combination of talent, interest and commitment. We are looking for a wide range of people — students, those post-college and beyond. Because you'll be working from your town, the system allows for a lot of flexibility around scheduling (including the ability to do all of your work remotely).

We're looking for great applicants across the country. Read on for more details below and submit your résumé and cover letter to contact@mnn.com.

What will I do?
MNN local bloggers and videographers are vital to our operation and will have a hand in everything we do. They work (virtually) alongside the MNN team as they write and break stories, help our editors keep a finger on the pulse of environmental news and produce all kinds of digital media from YouTube clips to photo galleries. In addition, each correspondent is represented individually on MNN, allowing him or her to report and analyze the top environmental stories in the area.

This experience can be great for students of journalism, environmental studies and for writers who want a résumé-building experience that might lead to a great job in new or old media.

The particulars
• The program is for the 2010 calendar year and will – in general – require five to 10 hours weekly, scheduled at times that are convenient for you (though we welcome correspondents who can contribute more hours).
• The program is run from your campus or hometown. You will be given assignments but also are encouraged to come up with your own topics to cover.
• Every participant is part of his or her own state channel at the Mother Nature Network where his or her résumé-building work can be followed by millions of people interested in the environment.
• The program is unpaid, but we do reward strong contributors periodically.

Just submit a resume and cover letter to contact@mnn.com and specify your interests.

It would be thrilling to join Mother Nature Network. There are so much to be done to save nature and wildlife.

Environmental Conservation is an international issue

Hi,
I am a student in the Middle East and would like to get involved in this programs. Are there any places open for non-US citizens?

any in asia?

is this only in the U.S. ? what about other parts of the world like asia.i think this is good if not only in the U.S. but world wide or globally. as we live in one planet called earth.

Don't work for free

Companies, newspapers, blogs and orgs need to stop luring in interns to work for free. If there is a job open and work needed to be done, MNN should pay. Simple as that. This is another step to lowering the bar so that bloggers don't get paid well. Don't do it. Thousands of other blogs will pay you to write for them.

Re: Don't work for free

HI Rachel, its good to hear from you. While we do have a couple of full-time job openings on the site right now (and are interviewing away for them), our intern program is a volunteer position for readers who want to let us know of local happenings and insights from their home towns. The position usually takes 7 to 10 flexible hours a week and lets students and others spread the word.

I want to be involved

This sounds great! I was wondering if we have to submit anything else besides a resume and a cover letter? Plus, is there a deadline?

Ambitious High School Sophomore

I didn't see any age requirement. Is it possible for a high school student to apply for this internship?

Age Flexible

Hi Amanda, we welcome all talented folks - high school, college, parents, retirees....anyone who cares about the environment in their state.

I Wanna Get Involved

Hello. I would like to become a correspondent and write articles to make a difference. I want to know if I can still apply and do this. I am very interested in environment and effects it has on health and other aspects of life. It appears there is already someone in my area, Louisville, who is a correspondent but I live in Oldham County, KY and still want to know if this is a possibility for me.

Thanks

All states open

There's no problem is there's already another correspondent in your state. States are big places :) and we're eager to have as much local reporting as possible. So please do apply!

WISE

I'm a senior in high school and I'm in an internship program called WISE. Instead of going to classes our 4th quarter we will be working. i was wondering if you have anything available for the spring of next year

Great opportunity

Good luck to all of you who have posted! For those of you who are interested, I just wanted to add in a plug here and say that this internship is an absolutely fantastic way to get your voice out and make a difference on the environmental front for your state. Remember: it's what you make of it!

Opportunities for Recent College Grads w/ BA in Environmental St

Hi!

This sounds like a great opportunity for students! However, what are some great opportunities for recent college grads with a degree in Environmental Studies? I graduated this past May and would love an opportunity to work with your organization in any capacity I can. I am in the Atlanta area.

hi

can I still apply if I'm not majoring in journalism/environmental studies?

correspondents

how many interns are selected for each state? should we still apply even though there are already many correspondents?

Going to college?

Can we apply if we are still in high school, but will be attending college in the fall?

Anonymous - you're welcome to apply!

You are welcome to apply anytime you like, even if you are in high school. You can send your resume and any information to contact@mnn.com.

Application

Also, is it possible to update our applications with recent accomplishments? and is it alright to just submit a cover letter and resume? (I didn't know that we were supposed to submit additional clips as well.)

Application

Dear MNN,
I applied for this internship a few months ago but have not heard back. Is there a specific time that I will hear back from you?
Thanks!

College Freshman

Hello, I will be attending an out of state school come the Fall, and therefore I was wondering if there were any internships purely offered during the Summer, or if I could shift the gears of my internship onto my campus during the school year.

Hi College Freshman

In some cases, we do allow students to start reporting from one state & then move to another once they start/stop college. Write us at contact@mnn.com and we can get into the specifics with you.

Question!

I'm going to a technical college. I want to help. Is it too late to apply?!

All colleges are great...

If you're a green-friendly person...and can write/video, then we'd love for you to apply.

A good fit?

I'm a senior college student currently working as a field technician in wetlands research (through the EPA in a roundabout way), a few prairie chicken surveys for windfarm placement for energy companies, etc. I'm also a Wildlife Ecology major....I've noticed that there seems to be more preservation than conservation on the site, just wondering if I'd fit. Doesn't seem like there are many hunters/anglers on the site. What are MNN's stances on hunting, fishing, etc?

yes, we'd love to hear from you

Having an intern who had worked in wetlands research would be ideal for us. And we're equally interested in preservation as well as conservation (and all aspects of the environment). Just sent your resume & cover letter to contact@mnn.com to be considered.

Intrested

Hey, I was wondering about if there is any age or grade specified. If AA in Ca reads this, please email me back. I am very intrested.

Yes, please do apply!

We're happy to receive applications from all and are willing to consider out-of-the-norm circumstances if your qualifications are good (i.e. maybe you're out of school for several quarters). Just send your clips & cover letter to contact@mnn.com. A note of advice, though: Be sure to spell words correctly when you send us your application. Can't help but notice that even in these casual notes....your words are your currency. :)

The team at MNN

you're doing a great job
