A Hippie is a person who was raised under the ideological system that came out of the tumultuous 1960's in North America and western Europe. They are either of the flower-child/baby boomer generation or that generations' subsequent offspring. They possess a core belief set revolving around the values of peace and love as being essential in an increasingly globalized society, and they are oftentimes associated with non-violent anti-governmental groups. There is a stigma of drug abuse attached to the
.... More
hippies that is prevalent to this day, specifically the use and abuse of marijuana and hallucinagens. Many rock movements, poets, artists, and writers from the 1960's to today have associated with this movement, most prominently The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and Phish. There are others too numerous to name. The movement, then and now, is considered a sub-culture by sociologists that associates itself with the left in all its political opinions. The conservative right often berates and abuses the opinions of people who associate themselves with the hippie movement and/or lifestyle, as the consider it dangerous and degenerative to a society to favor liberalism to such an extent. "When we heard about the hippies, the barely more than boys and girls who decided to try something different... we laughed at them. We condemned them, our children, for seeking a different future. We hated them for their flowers, for their love, and for their unmistakable rejection of every hideous, mistaken compromise that we had made throughout our hollow, money-bitten, frightened, adult lives." I am a late baby boomer. In the 60s, I had long hair, wore a turtleneck sweater, colorful striped pants, a leather peace pendant, and loved The Beatles. But I was in elementary school at the time...

Hey ! I am a tax payer and I support libraries. I have been described as a hippie. I prefer "intellectual" but the hugging strangers ( and flora) is a bit of a give-away.

Most of the generational hippies were rebelling against their parents, Then they went home and became their parents.
Some of us still exist out there on the margins.

I hug random people, I do occasionally get called Jesus, I occasionally get confused when people refer to "Lennon" and I think "Lenin," and I would install solar panels to save money...WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!?

The whole hippie movement was/is a bunch of crybaby selfish lazy and immoral radicals. Apparently most never chose to grow up. They're in their 60's plus now and are still watching cartoons, (Simpson's, Family Guy, etc...). What a waste of a generation.

I have always considered myself a hippie. I am in my sixties, never watch cartoons or any series or half-hour programs--mostly movies and history and some news because I am interested in our corrupt politics and how to possibly change the dire situation our country is in. I am an activist - for marijuana legalization and Ron Paul supporter. I am NOT a liberal (but I am mostly a Libertarian). Yes, I wore bell-bottoms and hippie-style clothing when I could; including my black armband against the
.... More
Viet Nam war. I am still against the wars we are waging. I smoked a lot of pot in my time and took a few "trips." I graduated with a bachelors degree in education and also a Master's degree in Guidance & Counseling (MS/Ed). I was a teacher for a few years, and then my profession was a programmer/anlayst until I retired. Yes, I am concerned with our environment, but I am not a radical to that extent. I recycle when I can. I believe hippies stand for Peace, Love, and brotherhood.

I have met many hippies in their 60's . Two of them were volunteers for the red cross, and the last (true) generational hippie I met got back from rebuilding houses in Joplin M.O. to help his sick sister in N.C.. And yes, they all enjoyed Simpsons. What have you done with your time sir?
