Declaring your independence

- Unnecessary fossil fuel consumption — This includes a commitment to walking/bicycling whenever possible as well as reducing electricity use. The purchase of hybrid or high-efficiency vehicles and the use of public transportation could also be key components.
- Damaging foods — The American diet is typically high in meat and miles. A vegetarian diet or one based on local foods would alleviate the problems associated with the norm.
- Excess (Reduce, reuse, recycle) — Reducing household waste through responsible consumption, reusing waste by composting, and recycling through local facilities are three ways to move toward independence from excess.
