AN ASSORTMENT OF FLAVOR: Since Cups opened its door just over a year ago, it has expanded to include dozens of flavors that keep customers coming back for more. (Photo: Megan Gallagher)
As a new resident of San Diego, much of my time is spent exploring all that the city has to offer. With so much to do — from scoping out the best beaches to shopping downtown to finding the best eats around town — I'm kept pretty busy. Recently, though, I took time to sit and relax at Cups, an organic cupcake bakery (cupcakery, if you will) in La Jolla. It's safe to say: California has never tasted so sweet. Cups opened its doors in November 2008 and has been the talk of the town ever since.
When I first stepped into the cozy bakery I was immediately greeted by a member of Cups friendly staff. The bakery, which has a modern décor, was bright and inviting. Guests enjoyed their favorite sweet treats on comfy couches and mod bar stools. As the owner put it, it looks like a fun bar but they don't serve any alcohol.
What makes Cups so unique, though, isn't the decorations. This cupcakery is the only three-star certified bakery in all of California, and the only restaurant in San Diego to receive such a high rating from the Green Restaurant Association. Cups earned this prestige through its innovation and creativity. The entire lounge area is made of LEED-certified recycled material — one wall is even decorated with recycled organic milk glasses. The to-go cups are also made from corn and 100 percent compostable recycled materials. Not only does Cups use organic building materials, it even uses organic cleaners at the end of a hard day's work.
On top of great green design standards, the thing that keeps people coming back for more is the organic ingredients in Cups' cupcakes. Every ingredient from the flour to the chocolate is completely organic and locally grown. It doesn't get much more sustainable than that.
My cupcake of choice was the Vanilla Vixen, a vanilla cupcake topped with French buttercream that was nothing short of delicious. (Though I must admit it took me a few minutes to decide between all of Cups' mouthwatering choices.) This unique bakery offers something for everyone's taste buds — from "churros and chocolate" to "caramel apple" or just plain "old school vanilla." And Cups' chefs are constantly baking up new ideas and new flavors. In fact, as I learned in speaking with one of Cups staff members, the ever-popular Vegan cupcake was actually a mistake turned scrumptious.
Since its opening just over a year ago, Cups has expanded tremendously. The bakery now includes everything including coffee, flavored milk, vegan and gluten free options and even healthy dog treats. In addition, guests now enjoy DJ entertainment on weekends and karaoke on Sundays. To find out more about Cups, check it out in La Jolla or watch the video below.
