April 22 is Earth Day 2011, an opportunity for all of humanity to appreciate our planet and raise awareness for how to better protect our home. The theme this year is “One Billion Acts of Green,” emphasizing that if all of us make a few green changes to our lifestyles, we can truly make a positive impact on the environment. This Friday, find a way to be involved in ways either big or small. I will be eschewing those gas guzzling cars Angelenos have a love affair with and instead use the most environmentally friendly transportation method of all: walking. What about you? What will be your green act for the day? Below I have included just a few ideas to get you started:
- Green spring clean: Feel that nagging guilt? That’s right, it’s time for spring cleaning. As you prepare for this year’s task, make the pledge to use green cleaning products. This way, you are truly leaving a clean mark on our planet.
- Drink up!: For coffee lovers who need their daily Starbucks fix, I don’t blame you but stop and consider all the waste incurred by your disposable cups. Start bringing your own reusable mug when you are grabbing a drink at the store. The best part? Starbucks will even fill your eco-friendly drink container with free coffee or tea this Earth Day!
- Natural vistas: Visit a U.S. National Park to truly appreciate the splendor of our natural world. From now until Sunday, April 24, all parks will have free admission. Be sure to volunteer in the future to keep our national parks clean by joining in clean-ups.
Go out there, party like there will be many more tomorrows, and spread the word that conserving our home planet deserves top billing!
