Death ValleyAt 282 feet below sea level, Death Valley wins the award for being the hottest and driest place in North America and also the lowest. Prospectors and settlers who attempted to cross the valley during the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s coined the ominous name. It sounds scary, but it should come as some relief to find out that only one death was recorded during the rush.
