On nearly 3 million acres in central Colorado lie the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, and within them, Mount Elbert — the state's highest point — and Pikes Peak. Pikes Peak (pictured here), another one of Colorado's highest summits, is the easternmost "fourteener" in the U.S. and serves as a visual landmark that can be seen from up to 130 miles away. This busy, urban national forest area ranks among the highest in the nation for recreational visits, for obvious reasons.
