These businesses have been honored for their green initiatives by city, state or national environmental agencies.

University of Iowa won the EPA's "P3: People, Prosperity and the Planet Student Design Competition for Sustainability" award for the project Design and Testing of a Point of Use Electrolytic Chlorine Generator for Drinking Water Disinfection in Poor Countries.  Students will develop a handheld bleach generator potentially useful for disinfecting drinking water in households of poor communities around the world.
Pella Corporation, a family-owned and privately held company, has been given Energy Star Sustained Excellence recognition for  promoting the Energy Star program nationwide by incorporating new technologies and practicing environmental stewardship.
The EPA awarded the Iowa City Senior Center an Active Aging Commitment Award for improvements on sidewalk and trail connectivity which encourage walking groups. Iowa City, working with the Johnson County Livable Community for Successful Aging Policy Board, analyzed the community’s needs for active aging and responded with a variety of policies and programs to encourage physical activity among older adults.
