Top Green Businesses

These businesses have been honored for their green initiatives by city, state or national environmental agencies.

Pottle's Transportation, Inc. won the EPA's Environmental Merit Award for new technologies that earned it the best fuel efficiency score possible from EPA. The 139 trucks in Pottle's fleet have reduced emissions by about 11,000 tons of CO2, nearly 13 tons of NOx and about a third of a ton of particulate matter. They have saved more than a million gallons of diesel fuel driving 14 million miles a year.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection worked with the Maine Department of Education and Maine Association of Pupil Transportation to win the Environmental Merit Award for encouraging less idling, more use of cleaner fuels and engine retrofits. The Maine Clean School Bus program helped 21 mostly rural districts establish bulk purchasing for diesel oxidation catalysts to retrofit 266 buses.
The Seniors Program Advisory Board collaborated with the town of Scarborough, Me., to encourage responsible development and healthy living for its 18,900 residents. The community has been named a Building Healthy Communities for Active Aging-Commitment award winner. The town also protects rural lands and open spaces and focuses development near existing resources.
