These businesses have been honored for their green initiatives by city, state or national environmental agencies.

Downtown Silver Spring won the EPA's Overall Excellence in Smart Growth Award for the Downtown Silver Spring Redevelopment Project. Silver Spring is a thriving example of what can happen when smart growth is used to rejuvenate a struggling commercial area. The project has structured parking garages rather than surface lots and uses space to reduce stormwater run-off.
Marriott International in Bethesda significantly reduces its environmental footprint and achieves impressive cost savings. The U.S. Department of Energry awarded the company for saving nearly $7.8 million on energy bills. The company also reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3 percent per available room since 2004.
The EPA's mid-Atlantic region has awarded an environmental achievement award to the “green team” at the Frito-Lay plant in Aberdeen, Maryland.  The Frito-Lay green team was honored for its proactive approach in lowering the plant’s environmental footprint.  Their actions significantly reduce electricity, natural gas and water usage.
