On the horizon: H.R. 2454

By Charles Ferrer, Local CorrespondentSun, May 31 2009 at 8:49 PM EST

There is one piece of legislation that I am currently watching like a hawk. I am referring to H.R. 2454 or “The American Clean Energy and Security Act."

The American Clean Energy and Security Act will create millions of new clean energy jobs, save consumers hundreds of billions of dollars in energy costs, enhance America’s energy independence and cut global warming pollution.  The legislation has four major points that it would to cover.

  • Clean energy- To promote renewable sources of energy, carbon capture and sequestration technologies, clean electric vehicles and the smart grid and electricity transmission.
  • Energy efficiency- To increase energy efficiency across all sectors of the economy, including buildings, appliances, transportation and industry.
  • Reduction on greenhouse gases- This legislation would cut global warming pollution by 17 percent compared to 2005 levels in 2020, by 42 percent in 2030, and by 83 percent in 2050.  These are science-based targets and within the range agreed to by USCAP.
  • Green Jobs- To promote green jobs during the transition to a clean energy economy.

On May 21, the Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives approved H.R. 2454 by a vote of 33-25. The bill will proceed to the full House floor where there is expected to be serious debate. I hope the bill passes as this piece of legislation will be key in helping the nation move towards a clean energy economy.

I will continue to monitor the progress on the American Clean Energy and Security Act.
