UPDATE: One step closer to energy independence

By Charles Ferrer, Local CorrespondentThu, Jul 16 2009 at 1:52 PM EST

On June 26, 2009, the House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. This is major victory for many environmentalists and for America. With this bill, greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by 83 percent by 2050, from 2005 levels. This cap on greenhouse gases matches with what environmentalists suggest would be necessary in order to avoid a catastrophic climate change. In addition, large investments of renewable sources of energy would be included if the legislation was passed. This is the key to transition the nation to energy independence. The bill is now being considered by the Senate, which will be a much steeper test for the bill. I hope to see the bill taken up by the Senate floor by the fall.
