Top Green Businesses

These businesses have been honored for their green initiatives by city, state or national environmental agencies.

The University of New Mexico has won an Energy Star Combined Heat and Power Award from the EPA for reducing its energy use by 20 percent. EPA recognized the university for its natural gas-fired CHP system at the Ford Utilities Center.  The CHP system runs with an operating efficiency of almost 65 percent and requires 20 percent less fuel than typical alternatives. 
The New Mexico Environment Department received a 2008 EPA Environmental Justice Achievement Award for its work to develop policies, amend regulations, and affect decision-making with environmental justice goals in mind.   As a result of NMED’s environmental justice outreach, the state implemented permitting reforms, new training programs, and improved public notification, comment, and participation.
EPA recognized the Santa Fe-based organization Homewise as a 2008 Water Efficiency Leader, for helping 595 New Mexico homeowners reduce water usage by an estimated 64 percent.  The organization reduced water consumption by implementing its Watersmart Program, which combines consumer information and lending, on-site installation assistance, and marketing.
