A "Pennings" Independence Day

By Megan Gallagher, Local CorrespondentThu, Jun 25 2009 at 2:48 PM EST

Warwick, N.Y. is the epicenter of fresh farm products. It has an ideal landscape that allows several farms in the area to flourish. So when I heard about Kitchen Gardens International's campaign to eat local this July 4, one place immediately came to mind: Pennings Orchard and Farm Market. Because I have family in Warwick, I've visited Pennings many times over the years. In fact, some of my family members have even worked there. I can't think of a better place to get your fourth of July meal; not only is the choice to go local good for the environment, but the country-living feel of Pennings is sure to boost your spirits as well.

Unlike your typical farmers market, which features fresh fruits and vegetables available to be prepared at home, Pennings also offers a "Harvest Grill" and ice cream parlor. Both offer delicious treats that separate Pennings from its competitors. The Harvest Grill features over 50 items, each of which comes straight from the harvests of the Pennings family. They have something to satisfy the appetite of people of all ages, from veggie burgers and grilled cheese to paninis and flavorful salads. I'd be hard pressed to find a person who couldn't enjoy something at Pennings.

Along with Thanksgiving, July 4 is one of those days where the food you're eating is serious business. There is something to be said for enjoying a meal with friends and family out in the sun. In light of the upcoming holiday, I asked my family and close friends to tell me their favorite pick from Pennings Orchard and Farm Market. And if we had it their way, here's what my party menu would look like:

Starters
Farm Fresh Hummus, Sweet Potato Fries, All Beef Hot Dogs and an Asparagus and English Pea Salad

Main Course
Pennings Famous Fish 'n Chips, Veggie Burgers, Turkey Burgers and Grilled Portabello Burgers

Dessert
Any of the 16 flavors of Ice Cream (with the works)

If you ask me, there is no better way to celebrate July 4th than by eating locally. It is patriotic in so many ways, such as protecting the environment and supporting our neighbors. And while not everyone has the benefit of living close to Pennings Farm Market, there are hundreds of markets across the country that can bring the same satisfaction. So this weekend, instead of clipping coupons and waiting on line at the supermarket, head to your local farm market and buy fresh, not frozen. Your guests will enjoy a change of pace, your local farm with enjoy the business and you can enjoy yourself knowing that you've done your part to help the environment. Gee, who knew being patriotic was so easy?

In most celebrations food is really necessary. Happiness involves gatherings that surely make the spirit of an occasion present. PENNING would be a good market place. It's almost Independence Day weekend, which means fireworks, barbecues, and celebrating the birth of our nation, and a lot of people are on the lookout for 4th of July dessert recipes. (Red, White, and Blue.) You can also make ice cubes from red and blue colored drinks like Gatorade or Kool Aid, and then add them to club soda. .... More
