Turn your Christmas tree into mulch
New York City's 16th annual Mulchfest is a success.

It's a familiar sight: almost as soon as the gifts are unwrapped, the Christmas trees are out laying on the curb. For the past 16 years, New York City has been facilitating Mulchfest, a green initiative to recycle discarded Christmas trees into wood chips.
Over the course of two days, residents are asked to bring their old trees to a few parks around the city. This year, the city was able to mulch a whopping 24,231 trees — a new record. Last year's record was a paltry 17,000 by comparison.
The wood chip mulch goes back into the city greening project, Million Trees NYC. Million Tress NYC which is aiming to plant and care for one million new trees by 2017. The mulch recreates natural forest floors and helps tree growth by reducing soil water losses, suppress weeds and protecting against extreme temperatures.
Any trees not recycled at Mulch Day are picked up the second weekend of the New Year (though apparently some Brooklyn residents never got the memo and are still dropping their trees off at mulching sites!).
