What's your stance on wind power as an energy source? When you hear people mention wind power, do you see visions of majestic windmills valiently spinning against a sky of blue? Or do you picture tacky-looking metal poles that serve as an eyesore to the nearby community?
Wind power is a hot topic in Hamlin, NY right now because there is a proposal to build a wind farm. Local community leaders worry that the construction of the windmills will take away from the small town feel for which Hamlin is known. Others want change and are demanding the construction of the wind farm. However, the pros and cons of building a wind farm need to be taken into account.
A few months ago in my Global Environment class we had a mock debate on wind power in Hamlin. My teacher was more than eager to record parts of the debate, and below is a clip from one of the most intense parts of it. Basically, each person had to choose a name out of a hat and research that person's stance on wind power. I drew Michelle Green, town board member who opposed the wind farm proposal. This was a difficult part for me to play because I support wind power. Take a look at this video and see what you think.
In my opinion, I say let's build wind farms, as long as they do not intrude on forested areas. Some people may not like the look of them while others are enamored by the fact that windmills pay themselves off in about six months. There are good and bad aspects to consider with every technology. Let's give wind power a chance!
I can't help but think about the words of that song by Bob Dylan, "The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind..."
