Update: Resolution number five!

In December, I resolved to learn how to cook.
 
My reasons were many:
  • I was going broke
  • I was getting fat
  • I felt guilty about my wasteful habits: I didn't order sustainable take-out (does it exist?), and I was throwing away a LOT of packaging
I have a progress update for you, coming from the most un-domestic person you'll ever meet.
 
For Christmas, I received a small rice cooker and hot water boiler. I use them every day. The water boiler is great for tea, oatmeal, miso soup and other delectables — in seconds.
 
Last week, I ventured out to Fairway, an amazing, low-price grocery store in West Harlem. I bought all of the ingredients (minus beef) for a cabbage stew recipe in this wonderful Rice Cooker cookbook I found on Google Books.
 
And despite a to-the-death struggle with an uncanny can opener, it was a massive success! (See photo above.) I put the stew over leftover Kashi 7-Grain Rice Pilaf that my mom sent me, and it tasted great. I now have leftover dinner for the rest of the weekend.
 
I'm pretty proud of my progress so far — I've been logging all the food I've been eating in an Excel spreadsheet, so I can track my health, spending and environmental waste.
 
Anyone else surprisingly doing well on their resolutions?
