At this time of year, as summer is about to begin, many people retreat outdoors to begin enjoying their luscious gardens and blindingly bright green lawns. Sometimes, the environmental cost of maintaining these two idyllic natural wonders can occasionally outweigh the benefits of having a lawn and garden oasis. Gardeners should keep in mind these ideas for maintaining a sustainable garden.
Consider purchasing electric or battery-powered tools in lieu of gasoline-powered tools. Many of these new electric tools are inexpensive and are more efficient than certain gasoline-powered tools. Many residences do not have available composting bins, so consider purchasing yard waste bags that can be composted. One popular composting bag is the BioBag
. These inexpensive bags prevent the use of traditional plastic bags and are not built from dangerous chemicals like polyethylene. Another excellent gardening solution is organic-based plant food and garden mulch. Organic-based plant food allows flowers to receive more than adequate feed and allows plants to grow just as well in comparison to traditional chemical-based plant foods.
Adhering to these sustainable solutions will allow for a truly green garden to be born.
