Cardboard art

By:

Saturday, August 1, 2009 - 15:10
In my search for art created from recycled material, several Ohio artists caught my eye.

Mark Langan makes amazing 3D pieces out of recycled cardboard. When thinking about what art to do with cardboard I only thought of perhaps painting on it or making some boxy sort of sculpture, but Langan's work goes beyond and in between that. It is made simply from glue and cardboard. he creates pieces with environmental messages, company logos, and the replication of famous images.

Uncle Sam agrees, recycling is our duty as Americans!

My next find was actually an entire recycled art show in Columbus, Ohio. The show called "Second Nature" showcased 25 artists from the state who created pieces with recycled or found materials. The show runs from August 2 - 22 if you can check it out.

can you identitfy the recycled parts this quirky bird is made of?

Right near where I live, the city of Lakewood undertook a small but fabulous project to decorate recycle bins. These bins were placed near trash bins to promote recycling.

this recycle bin was recycled from a regular trash bin!

I was inspired to research this because I am planning an environmental art show in my home town of Bay Village. I wanted to make it big and impactful so it is going to take place next summer, giving me a whole year to plan. In conjunction with a small local art galllery we will feature environmental groups, organic food, eco-friendly art and an art contest in which all pieces are made from litter picked up in the community. I hope it is a success!
