Post Envirothon results

It's been a few weeks since my original blog about the Envirothon but here are the final results!

My team from Coventry High won first place for Rhode Island and was able to move onto the national competition, sponsored by Canon, in Asheville, North Carolina!

I was unable to post the results sooner because our team needed to find a chaperone and make sure that we could raise all of the $3,000 needed to get us to and from the competiton.

After winning the state competition, my team and I began our summer of studying and fundraising. We canned outside of liquor stores and supermarkets, wrote letters asking for cash donations, went to numerous businesses asking for donations that could be raffled off and hosted a fundraiser breakfast at Dave's Bar and Grill. Along with all of this, we still had to find time to study the
  • forestry,
  • soils,
  • wildlife,
  • aquatics,
  • and biodiversity
of North Carolina. As it turned out, all of this studying just wasn't enough! Competing against more than 50 teams representing U.S. states and Canadian provinces, my team placed 39th. This was a good improvement from last year, however, where we placed 49th out of 53 in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Overall, my team did very well and it was only one test score (in our oral presentation) that kept us from being placed in the top 25.

Competing in the national envirothon for three years was a great oppurtunity and I have learned so much!
